शूलम् – वातशूलम् । सु. उ. ३८/११
शूलम् – यथा कस्यचिद् कीलकाहनेन तीव्रा वेदना लक्ष्यते, तद्वद् तस्य यस्माद् वेदना लक्ष्यते, तस्मात् शूलम् इह उच्यते । सु. उ. ४२/८१
न हि वातात् ऋते शूलम् । अ. सं. सू. ३५

Literary MeaningM / W – ‘ S`hoola’means any sharp or acute pain ( esp. that of colic or gut ), Pras`hamana means tranquillizing, pacifying, curing
Implied MeaningThese drugs pacify the pain in abdomen.
ElaborationS`hoola means pain. S`hoola resembles the pain caused by piercing of a nail. It is caused by vitiation of Vaayu alone.
To pacify pain are called as S`hoolapras`hamana . Medicines like Pippalee, Pippaleemoola, Ahiphena etc. are useful to pacify pain.
