|Literary Meaning||M / W – ‘ S`haaka’ means vegetable, greens, ‘ Varga’ means group|
|Implied Meaning||Those leafy or fruit vegetables which are roasted / fried / cooked with oils or spices are called as S`haaka.|
|Elaboration||Various leafy and fruity vegetables are categorised under S`haaka Varga. These vegetables are cooked using spices and oil. General qualities of S ` haaka varga are:|
1. Pacifies Pitta
2. Increases Vaata
3. Increases Kapha in moderate amount
4. Increases and facilitates urinary and fecal output.
5. Sweet in taste and Vipaaka
Jeevantee is described as the best vegetable ; whereas Saarshapa is the least useful vegetable. Food which is abundant with preserved and dried vegetables should be avoided.
