Literary MeaningPlacenta with umbilical cord
Implied MeaningIt is a temporarily developed structure in the body during pregnancy to connect umbilical cord ( Garbhanaabhinaad`ee ) and uterus for the nourishment of the foetus.
ElaborationThe ovum after fertilization enters in the uterine cavity to embed itself in the endometrium ( Garbhas`hayyaa ). It derives its nourishment from the Rasa by osmosis ( Upasneha Nyaaya ) in the first trimester, as the placenta is not formed till then.
At the beginning of second trimester the placenta is formed at the site of embedding. It becomes the lifeline for the foetus and it has nothing greater or better than it, hence the name Aparaa. It brings nourishment to the foetus and is in the form of a vessel. In certain situations, it can wind itself around the neck of the foetus and manifest as foetal distress and needs emergency surgical intervention.
The delivery is incomplete till the placenta is delivered and the umbilical cord is severed and the neonate cries.
