Literary MeaningM / W – causing unctuousness, being or becoming oily
Implied MeaningInternal consumption of substances having unctuous attribute ( Oil, Ghee Vasaa and Majjaa ) or external application of it over body is called Snehana ( oleation ).
ElaborationOleation is the best remedy for alleviation of Vaata ( the most important among all the Dosha ). Oleation therapy is the first to be administered before the application of the पंचकर्म therapy. Oleation and then sudation has a combined effect, which causes moistening, breaking away of the bonds between the Dosha and the Dhaatu and liquefaction of Dosha .
It could be done by two methods:
1. Internal – It means consumption of unctuous substances as per the strength of the digestive power in small ( rhasva ), medium ( madhyama ), or large ( uttama ) doses ( maatraa ).
Types of internal oleation according to its combination are:
a ) Yamaka Sneha ( mixture of 2 Sneha , e. g. Ghee Taila )
b ) Trivrit Sneha ( mixture of 3 Sneha, e. g. Ghee Taila Vasaa )
c ) Mahaa Sneha ( mixture of 4 Sneha, e. g. Ghee Taila Vasaa Majjaa
2. External – external application of oil to the body ( अभ्यंग Mardana )
Benefits of oleation – It cleans alimentary tract, helps to develop strong body tissue and physical strength, enhance digestive power, and potentiates the sensory organs.
Usage – Vaataroga ( Nurological disorders ) Abhhishyanda Timira Kricchronmeelana ( dfficulty in opening the eyes ).Unctuous substances possess attributes like heavyness, Sara Manda , subtle, Drava ( liquid ) ( A. H. 16 / 1 ).
