Literary MeaningM / W – Caustic alkalise
Implied MeaningKshaara ( caustic alkalis ) is a type of subsidiary sharp instrument. It removes vitiated skin, flesh ( Kshan`anaad ), and hence it is called Kshaara . Treatment given with it is called Kshaara Karma .
ElaborationCaustic alkalis are considered as superior subsidiary sharp instruments compared to leeches and अग्निकर्म ( Abrading, cauterisation ).
Caustic alkalis have Aagneya property and are salty, pungent, hot and intense. Hence they act as Paachaka ( transform undigested food to digested food ), Vilayanam ( liquefaction of Vaata Kapha dominant oedema ), सौषधं ( purification of ulcer ), Ropan`a ( healing of purified ulcer ), S`hoshan`a absorption of liquid waste ( Kleda ), Stambhana ( arresting excessive bleeding ), and Lekhana ( scrapping of ulcers ).
Types of Kshaara ( Caustic alkalise ) are:
1. Pratisaarn`iya – For external application in diseases like कुष्ठ ( Skin diseases ), abscess, tumour, piles
2. Paaneeya – For internal use in diseases like गुल्म ( abdominal tumour ), Ascites
