Literary MeaningM / W – Herbal medicine, drug, medicine in general, a vessel for herbs.
Implied MeaningIt is one of the four pillars essential for management of any disease.
ElaborationAn ideal medicine should posses the following qualities:
1. Bahukalpam – It should possess the potential for preparing various dosage forms ( Svarasa Kalka Choorn`a etc .) as per the diseases condition.
2. Bahugun`am – It should posses various attributes like Guru ( heavy to digest ), Manda, Sheeta ( cold ) etc. to treat different diseases.
3. Sampannam – It should have Rasa ( taste ), Veerya ( potency ), and विपाक ( post digestive taste ) so as to act effectively in different conditions of diseases. ( A. H. 1 / 28 Hemaadri )
4. Yogyam – The medicine should be procured at an appropriate period, from a proper location, should be well processed and should agree with the patient. It should have multiple applicability e. g. ( decoction, powder, fresh juice etc .) and should possess potency to eradicate the disease completely.
As per Asht`aangasamgraha Aushadha is divided into two types: ( Ast. Sng. Su. 1 / 45 )
1. S`hodhana Aushadha useful in Panchakarma.
2. S`hamana Aushadha useful in palliative management.
